Final for The Odyssey
Here are the criteria for The Odyssey Board Game:
The board game must cover Odysseus' voyage and his adventures from Troy back to Ithaca and Penelope' arms.
The player's success must be dependent upon knowledge of the story, the characters, the mythology (Athena, Hephaestus, Persephone, etc.) and the literary terms we covered (i.e., Homeric similes, etc). The success cannot be due to random luck.
The end of the board game should occur when the first player lands on Ithaca, defeats the suitors and convinces Penelope that he is her husband.
Or if you want to take a feminist slant, then the first player who outlasts the suitors and has Odysseus convince her that he is her husband wins the game.
There are many different approaches you can take with the game; one approach might be that all the players vie to become Odysseus and who ever gets to Ithaca first becomes Odysseus.
One way to do the game would be to construct a board game with representations of the various lands and adventures chronicled in The Odyssey. I would suggest Troy as the starting place; other stopping points on the board game should include: the Isles of Circe and Calypso; the Land of the Underworld; the Land of the Cyclops; the Isle of the Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis; and Odysseus's bedroom as "Home".
The player rolls the dice, moves her/his piece (which could be a little ship), lands on a square, selects a card and answers an Odyssey related question. If the player answers it correctly, then the player may progress further along the squares and hang out for a while with Calypso, or is allowed to jump past Scylla and Charybdis.
If s/he answers it incorrectly, then s/he may be forced to languish with Calypso while losing a turn or two, or is forced to go back to the Isle of the Lotus Eater and eat some more lotus instead of taking a turn. Or if the player gets an answer wrong, then s/he loses a couple of turns while stuck in the Underworld or loses a couple of turns because s/he has been eaten alive by Polyphemus. (How you come back to life after being eaten by Polyphemus is your problem.) Anyway, you get the picture.
The effectiveness of the game is dependent upon your knowledge of The Odyssey, the skill and knowledge of the players to win - again, it cannot be random luck - the logic of the game, and the attractiveness of the game. Color and drawings would be a big plus - you can always download some drawings of sea monsters and mermaids, etc., if you're shy about your artistic abilities.
These are just some suggestions. Be creative and think outside the box.
If you cannot remember THE ODYSSEY well enough to begin working on it over the weekend, I have thoughtfully provided some links to help jog your memory. Don't use the excuse that I have your reading logs, 'cause guys, I read many of your reading logs and they are so vague, unclear and factually wrong that they would be less than useless (if that's possible) in helping you recreate the story. So go to these links for a little assistance if you need it:

How to Do the Reading Log for A Night to Remember
Since there seems to be some misunderstanding on how to do the reading log for the noveL, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, here 'tis, "How to do the reading log!":
Write at least a paragraph which is an overview of the events of the story. Then choose two to three characters from that chapter whose stories you find affecting or moving or weird or interesting. The stories are very short - just snippets, really - and should not take long to do. Then write down three words - at least - you did not know the meaning of from the chapter and most importantly, LOOK UP THE DEFINITIONS and WRITE THEM DOWN IN THE READING LOG. It's not going to be much help if you just write the words down, right? Here are some words volunteered by the second period class:
ebullient
trek
unperturbed
leisurely
Belfast: is a city in Ireland noted for its ship building
quartermaster, astern, cleat are nautical terms.
If you are doing Cornell notes then you may continue working on your reading log in that manner.
Remember, your fifth chapter of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is due on Tuesday, December 4th.
On Monday we will resume our voyage to Greece.
Happy reading!

We then find ourselves on the beautiful island of the Wind God, Aeolus who does us a gigantic favor! What do we know about her?
How do we know?
After reading, turn to a partner and discuss the questions for a few minutes. Be sure to cite evidence from the text to support your answers.
1st and 2nd Periods:
Reread the letter again and identify the three most significant sentences that reveal Chiadis’ argument.
Make a two-column chart in your composition book (Reader’s/Writer’s Notebook) and record the sentences/phrases you think are most significant. Then, in the right hand column do a “quick write” explaining what the sentences/phrases reveal about Chiadis’ argument.
When you are finished, share with two other people.
Then, read the letter again. and answer the following questions in your Reader’s/Writer’s Notebook:
Where could Chiadis have used better/more reasons and evidence to
strengthen her argument?
What other counter arguments should she have addressed? How might
she have rebutted them (effectively argued against the arguments or shown the opposing side’s arguments to be wrong)?
Then, read the letter again and notice how she structured her argument.
Identify the thesis statement and note its location.
Analyze the first paragraph:
Identify the anecdote.
Why do you think she started the letter with an anecdote?
Look at paragraph 3:
Identify the mini-topic sentence.
Locate the three examples of supporting evidence.
What are the three examples?
Look at paragraph 4:
Who is the expert?
Why do you think the student is using an expert to support her
argument?
Note how the expert is “cited.”
Look at paragraphs 5, 6, and 7:
What are some of the concessions the writer gives?
What are concessions? (And no, they aren’t the popcorn and
“Red Vines” you buy at the movies.)
Look at paragraph 8:
What is the counter argument?
What is her rebuttal? (Rebuttal means to show how and why the
opposing side’s counter argument is wrong.)
Look at paragraph 9:
Why does the letter writer include her interviews with students?
Why does the letter writer include the results from the poll?
How does this help her argument?
Look at paragraph 10:
What role does this paragraph play in the letter?
What does she include in this paragraph?
Write your responses to the above questions in your Reader/Writer notebook.

Pass out the “Persuasion Unit” which is in the wire basket on the table by the door. Each “Persuasion Unit” packet is separated by a pink paper with the title “Persuasion Unit” printed on it. Each student should receive her/his own packet.
There is a brown cardboard box by the desk with black/white composition books. Each student should receive a copy. That is YOUR book; please be sure to put your name on it. Possess it. Record your thoughts in it. Decorate it if you like, but it’s your book - own it.
Read aloud the Persuasion Letter Model: “Dear Board of Education”.
Then break into pairs and answer the question on the “Task Sheet”:

You may also be asked to repeat the piece again if it appears to be too “improvie”.
Please be aware that your reading logs for your book will be collected on the day of the final and will be factored into your final semester grade.

ESSAY TOPICS
FOR
ROMEO AND JULIET
Seelct one of the topics below for your culiminating essay on ROMEO and JULIET. Be sure to use supporting evidence from the text to prove your thesis statement. The essay will be due on Monday, May 21, 2007.
1. Does Romeo have a death wish? Be sure to reference all the things he
says in Act 1, Scenes 1 - 4 (particularly Scene 4 between Romeo and
Mercutio) and again Romeo’s soliloquy at the beginning of Act 5, Scene
1 before Balthasar enters.
2. Discuss Shakespeare’s use of light and dark in Romeo and Juliet. Be sure to
provide supporting evidence from the play. Be sure to include
quotations from Act 1, Scene 1, in which Benvolio and Lord Montague use
references of darkness to describe Romeo’s mood; quotations from Act,
Scene 4 in which Romeo uses metaphors of light/heaviness and light/darkness
to describe his emotional state. Please be sure to reference Romeo’s famous
lines from Act 2, Scene 2, in which he sees Juliet on the balcony (“What light
through yonder window breaks? It is the East and Juliet is the sun!”) Be sure
to look through the rest of the play and find other examples to support your
thesis.
3. Discuss the lack of parental involvement in the lives of Romeo and Juliet. Be
sure to include the observation that the Nurse and the Friar serve as parental
substitutes. Show that the lack of parental involvement is one of the reasons
for the tragic outcome of the story.
4. Discuss how Juliet’s decision at the end of Act 3 not to include the Nurse in
her confidences leads to her death.
5. Discuss how Shakespeare uses metaphor to convey time and place in
Romeo and Juliet.
6. Compare and contrast the Friar and the apothecary in Romeo and Juliet and
show how the apothecary is the foil of the Friar. A foil is a character who
is the opposite of another in order to show the characteristics of both
characters. Sometimes the best way to understand a character is to
show what the character is not and the writer does this by creating another
character who is his/her opposite. By seeing this contrast, the reader or
audience can more clearly see and understand the characters.
7. Discuss the relationship between Lord and Lady Capulet. Discuss the
scenes in which they appear and create an arc that traces their relationship.
You need to take a position regarding their relationship and support your
thesis by using evidence from the play that shows they have a loving,
respectful relationship or an unhealthy, abusive relationship.
8. Discuss Lord Capulet’s personality in the play. Be sure to include all the
scenes in which Lord Capulet appears and trace the arc of his personality
throughout the play. Be sure to take a position regarding his personality and
use evidence from the play to support your position.
9. Discuss whether or not the lovers’ fate was written in the stars or if their
“fate” was the result of bad choices and judgments by the parties involved.
Again, use evidence from the play to prove your thesis.
10. Discuss Shakespeare’s many references to both the wedding bed and to
death. You may also wish to include the many instances of foreshadowing
in the play. Be sure to include evidence from the play to support your thesis.

9th Grade Spring Syllabus
Welcome to 9B English. I hope this semester is fun, enjoyable, challenging, thought provoking and educational for you. We will be concentrating on reading comprehension, writing literary and persuasive essays, and of course, the mechanics of writing - otherwise known as grammar. We will be using the following books:
Vocabulary for High School Students: Level C
HOLT HANDBOOK (grammar)
Elements of Literature: THE ODYSSEY and ROMEO and JULIET
NIGHT
You are expected to keep a notebook for my class. A separate three ring binder would be nice - one that you can put papers into (which I will thoughtfully hole-punch for you so that you can put them into your binder). EVERYTHING I GIVE YOU SHOULD BE PUT INTO YOUR NOTEBOOK! That means handouts I give you, your homework, your classwork, your tests, your essays - in short, everything you will do or have done in my class should go into your notebook. This acts as protection for both you and me. Sometimes teachers make mistakes (Yes, that does happen. Even with me.) If I forget to record a grade (and that does happen sometimes) then you have proof that you did the work. If you have thrown it away then........Okay, so keep ALL your work in your notebook. At the end of the semester I will check your notebook for organization and completeness. This is a major grade. (And keep it small and lightweight! Those backpacks get heavy!)
We will finish reading THE ODYSSEY this semester, and after we finish we will work on a five page research paper. You will choose one topic related to THE ODYSSEY; the topic may be about some aspect of THE ODYSSEY, or about Greek Culture or The Greek gods, etc. You will have about two weeks to work on the paper and we will spend time in the library so that you may do research. Don’t blow this off, it’s an important part of your grade!
After we finish the research paper, we will begin reading ROMEO and JULIET. You will keep a running reading log on ROMEO and JULIET, which will be collected and graded; five open book tests on the play, plus group acting activities (rewrites and performances of your scripts) and essays.
If there is time, we will read the autobiographical NIGHT by Eli Wiesel.
Now for the good news: I don’t give homework over the weekend. Now for the bad: I do give homework - lots of homework! But I do give you plenty of time to do it. If you are absent, then you are allowed to turn in the work the next day after your return. So if you are absent on Monday, you return on Tuesday, then you will turn in the work on Wednesday. The week’s work as well as the due dates will be written on the blog. The handouts will be in the baskets on top of the book case. It is up to you to check the blog and the baskets for any work you may have missed during your absence. Saying that you didn’t know about the work is not a valid excuse - it will be posted on the weblog, and the hand outs will be on the table.
If you have internet access you can log onto hollywoodhighschool.net, go to the teacher’s weblog and click on my name (Bridges - in case you’ve forgotten) and there you will be able to see an updated class agenda for the week. You may also check your grade on engrade.com. In order to do that, you must sign up for a student account, which is free.
Class participation is a must. The class is only going to be as good as we all make it. If you help make the class fun and interesting, yet you have a borderline grade, then that extra class participation grade may make the difference between a lower and a higher grade. So don’t fall asleep! Pinch yourself, say something smart and interesting, or ask a good question and your grade just might go up.
Finally, let’s make this a safe environment where everyone feels secure and valued. Let’s respect our differences and realize that it is these differences that make the world wonderful and brilliant.
The grading schedule is as follows:
90 - 100 = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C
60 - 69 = D
59 - 0 = F
Tests are worth 30%
Essays are worth 30%
Homework is worth 30%
Class participation is worth 10%
Finally, if you are not happy with a grade on a test or an essay or even homework, then you may rewrite the essay or the test or the homework, incorporating the corrections on your work, staple your corrected work to the original version and turn it in for a higher grade. The corrected grade will be one grade higher than your original grade. If you made a "C/C", and you rewrite the essay, then the grade will be raised to a "B/B".
I am here to help you learn, to grow in appreciation of literature, to improve your reading, writing and grammar skills, and to pass with a good grade. I am here to help you. You can make this happen by working with me, and being respectful to everyone in the class, including yourself.
I have read this and understand the requirements of the class.
