Interim Assessment

The premise behind the study is that most adults think that cell phones and laptops are a waste of time for teenagers.  Instead of being on their phones texting, and/or sending inappropriate photos to friends and enemies, and/or bullying or gossiping on snapchat, instagram or facebook, teenagers should be talking to their friends face-to-face, or being outside, doing sports, exercising, volunteering, learning a new skill, studying, participating in art projects – music, dance, theatre, or art – or working.

Researchers from USC and Berkeley decided to explore why young adults find digital media so compelling, and why it is so important to today’s youth.

Their findings might surprise many adults. The researchers found that far from wasting teenagers’ time, digital media actually play a very positive role in their lives:
1.     Teenagers use digital media to maintain and extend friendships.
2.     Teenagers use digital media  to explore and expand their knowledge that goes beyond what they have access at school or in their community.
3.     Digital media allow students “to geek out” and dive into a topic that they may not have access to at their school.
4.     New media give students a sense of freedom, autonomy, and mastery over a subject or skill.
5.     New media also allow students to create and to publicize their creative projects such as music on youtube.com or myspace.com; art and literature on blogs. Some teens, such as Justin Bieber,  have actually become famous and started highly successful careers in music.

The next question for the researchers is how can New Media be used to help facilitate teenagers’ learning?

Directions:
On the second page, read under “To stay relevant….digital media.”
Underline the main idea and then in your own words write the main idea.
Arath:
“What, the authors ask, would it mean to really exploit the potential of the learning opportunities available through online resources and networks?
How youth can use the internet for learning.

Graphic Organizer:
Directions: Read the four questions below. As you address each questions, re-read the paragraphs in “Living and Learning with New Media’ that the question is addressing. Using the text, write your responses in the “My Thoughts” and “Evidence from the Text” sections. You will then be given time to talk to a classmate, share ideas, and take notes. Based on your conversations, you will complete the “My Thoughts Now” section.

First Graphic Organizer:

1.     Why do the authors start out by stating that the team of researchers “interviewed over 800 youth and young adults and conducted over 5, 000 hours of online observations as part of the most extensive U.S. study of youth media use”? How does this statement impact the reader’s perceptions of the authors and the article?

My Thoughts: The researchers wanted to show that their research project was credible, valid and reliable. The larger the number of respondents, and the more hours spent in interviewing the respondents would show that the study had greater credibility, validity and reliability.

Evidence from the Text:
From all their observations, the researchers have found that the digital world is actually providing new opportunities for youth in extending their social world, in self-directed learning, and independence.

My Thoughts Now (Confirmation, new ideas, or differences after talking with a partner.)

Vocabulary:
Asiah: to contradict means to oppose or go against, or to prove wrong or incorrect.

Second Graphic Organizer

2.     In the third paragraph does the research support what your parents and teachers have been saying about your use of New Media or does it contradict? Cite specific examples from the text to support your response:

My Response:   “The on-line activities have captured teens’ attention because they provide avenues for  extending social worlds, self-directed learning, and independence.
