What if Odysseus were a woman? How
would The Odyssey be different?
Introductory Paragraph
Thesis statement
A sentence that combines the subject of
the essay with the writer’s position.
What is your argument? What are you
arguing and what is your position?
Three things that you want to argue –
It would be completely different – and
three ways reasons why
It would be pretty much the same – with
a few differences and why
Transitional sentence that allow a
smooth entry into the second paragraph (the first body paragraph)
First body paragraph
Mini-thesis statement – this lets us know
what this paragraph is going to be about.
Compare the actual Odysseus’ adventures
and how they would be different if he had been a she.
You might want to take a couple of the
adventures (situations) and examine how they might have been if Odysseus had
been a woman.
The first body paragraph might examine
how the Cyclops’ story might have turned out if Odysseus had been a woman.
The second body paragraph might examine
how Circe’s story might be different had Odysseus been a woman.
The third body paragraph might examine
how the Sirens’ story might have turned out differently had Odysseus been a
woman.
You can decide if Odysseus’ crew is
composed of men or women.
The concluding paragraph: You restate
the thesis statement. Then briefly go over the main points in the body
paragraphs, and finally, your conclusion.
The essay will be due on Friday, March
23rd at 11:59 p.m. Please submit to schoology. It must be typed and have
500 words.
For extra credit, you might write
several scenarios about how the stories would change according to the
configuration of the gender roles; for example, how would the story be affected
if her crew were all male? Then you might want to examine how the story would
be affected if her crew were all female. The gender roles and the gender
balance would definitely affect the story’s dynamics.
