OCTOBER 6TH - 10TH
WEEKLY SCHEDULE
FOR 9TH ADVISORY

MONDAY, OCTOBER 6TH:

Break into groups of three or four to create a group name, a symbol and set of rules the group should follow.

Once you are finished, reflect on the roles each student played in the group. Who was the decision maker? Were there any disagreements? How were they resolved?

Do you think people act differently in a group? Have you ever been in a group situation you felt uncomfortable in but for the sake of the group (fitting in), you followed along?

Groupthink is a term developed by a psychologist, Dr. Irving Janis. It describes a process that happens to groups that cause them to act violently, or make irrational decisions. In a “groupthink” situation members of the group conform their own ideas to create group consensus.

Discuss situations where you might have seen “groupthink” occur.


TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7TH:

Discuss the following and act out scenes where the following could occur:

Illusion of invulnerability

Unquestioned belief in the inherent morality of the group

Collective Rationalization of the group’s decision

DIscuss the following and act out scenes where the following could occur:

Shared stereotypes of other groups

Self-censorship

Illusion of unanimity

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10TH:

Discuss and present scenes where the following occur:

Pressure on members to confirm to group’s behavior

Self-appointed mindguards protect the group from negative information

MONDAY, OCTOBER 6TH:

1st and 4th Periods:

Please bring your VOCABULARY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT every day to class. Assign exercises 6 - 9; pages 9 - 15, This assignment will be due on Wednesday, October 8th.

Break into groups of three and using your Necklace packet, analyze Madame Loisel’s character development, the use of irony and point of view in the story.
Gather together in socratic circle and discuss “The Necklace.”

4th Period:

Final presentations of “Continuing the Story: The Necklace.”


TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7TH:

1st and 4th Periods:

Your VOCABULARY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT is due and payable today: pages 4 - 14; exercises 1 - 4 and 6 - 9.

Wee short quizzes over “The Sniper” and “The Necklace”.

An essay will be assigned today on “The Necklace”. The essay must be two pages long and have five paragraphs; The essay may be hand written, but must be neat and have a rough draft. You may also type it.

Discuss the use of irony and character in “The Necklace”. Compare the character of Madame Loisel at the beginning of the story with her character at the end of the story. Has she changed? Give evidence to show how she has or has not changed. What are the ironies in the story regarding Madame Loisel and how do they contribute to her character development or lack of development?

This essay will be due on Wednesday, October 8th.


WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8TH:

Warm-up: Choose ten words from pages 4 - 15 in your VOCABULARY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT and make a pictionary of the words. One drawing per word. Write a grammatically correct sentence for each vocabulary word. show to your partner.

Work on your essay. The essay is due at the end of the period,
