Special Two Week Schedule
Two Hour Block Schedule!

Tuesday, May 16th:

Period 3:
Read Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, Scene 4
Setting:
In front of the Capulets’ mansion (villa)
Romeo and his pals, Benvolio and Mercutio, are preparing to enter their enemies’ territory. They are putting on masks to disguise themselves.  What they intend to do is very dangerous for Romeo and Benvolio!

What does Mercutio advise Romeo to do?
To look at the other fine ladies at the party!
Why does Mercutio tell Romeo the story about Queen Mab?
To cheer him up!
What is Romeo feeling before he walks into the party?
He has a premonition that something is going to happen tonight that will change his life and maybe end in his death!
I fear too early; for my mind misgives
Some consequence yet hanging in the stars
Shall bitterly begin his fearful date
With this night’s revels and expire the term
Of a despised life, closed in my breast,
By some vile forfeit of untimely death.
What is this called when something hints at an event that is going to happen later in the play or story?
Foreshadowing!

Mercutio is very similar to the word mercurial. What do you think mercurial might mean? Is there a word that shares a common root word?

Mercury is a chemical that is used in thermometers. It goes up or down according to the temperature. A person whose emotions go up and down is called mercurial.

Safia:
Explains that Romeo is very depressed and both Mercutio and Benvolio try to cheer up Romeo.
Mercutio uses the Queen Mab story to cheer up Romeo.
Queen Mab is the midwife of fairies.
A midwife is a nurse who helps a woman give birth.

Act 1, Scene 5
Lord Capulet is teasing the young women that if they don’t want to dance, then he will tell everyone that they have corns and ugly feet.
He also encourages the young men to flirt with the young ladies.
Romeo spies Juliet and he is speaking to himself how beautiful she is -
“She teaches the torches to burn bright.”

Tybalt overhears him and is angry that a Montague is present at the party and wants to fight him. He tells Capulet that Montague is present but Capulet tells him to leave him alone. But Tybalt gets angrier and argues with Capulet, but Lord Capulet refuses to hear him and tells him in no uncertain terms to leave Romeo alone.

Romeo makes his way to Juliet and using religious imagery, he flirts with her and KISSES HER!!!!

They do not know that the other is from the enemy family!

How does Romeo find out that Juliet is a Capulet?
Samantha:
The Nurse: “Her mother is the lady of the house….”

How does Juliet find out that Romeo is a Montague?
Jasmin:
The nurse says: “His name is Romeo, and a Montague/The only son of my enemy!

Juliet also foreshadows her fate, which is very ironic: (hint: page 814)
Gina:
Hellen:
Safia:
“Go ask his name – If he married,
My grave is like to be wedding bed.”

Prologue:
Old desire is Romeo’s love for Rosalind

Romeo overhears Mercutio’s naughty jokes and is annoyed.

Kimberly: He is picking flowers to make medicine! This is important because it is foreshadowing!!!!
