 You will choose two stories from The Odyssey  and find a moral or life lesson in each story.

You are going to take notes on writing your essay for the last few stories we read in The Odyssey: “The Battle of the Cicones”; “The Lotus Eaters”; “The Cyclops”; “Circe”; “The Land of the Dead”; “Scylla”; “Charybdis”; and “Helios."

This is going to be due Friday, March 3rd.  It should be typed and you must submit it to turnitin.com.

It should have a minimum of five paragraphs or 500 words.

The topic is the moral or life lesson to be learned from at least two of the stories we read in The Odyssey.

The first paragraph should have the title of the book, the title of the two stories you will be discussing, and the author’s name. The introductory paragraph should briefly list what you are going to be discussing and it should have a grabber that makes the reader want to continue with your essay!

Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence – or what your paragraph is about! You are going to briefly describe the story you have chosen. Then you need to use a brief quotation from the story to support your claims about the story. Every time you use a quotation, then you need to explain, elaborate, or clarify the quotation.Then you need to show how this story provides a life lesson.

There should be a minimum of three body paragraphs.

Conclusion:
Briefly, recap the main points of the two stories and the life lessons drawn from the story.

Jassmyn will submit her ten note cards on Tuesday, February 28th. Ten more will be due this Friday, March 3rd. The research paper will be due on Wednesday, March 9th.

Writing The Odyssey Essay:
Open your books to The Odyssey, skim the stories, and decide which two stories you are going to write about. Remember the prompt is: analyzing the stories in terms of the life lesson learned.
You can write about two of the following stories:
Calypso, the Bag of Winds, the Battle of the Cicones, the Lotus Eaters, the Cyclops, Circe, Land of the Dead, Circe, the Sirens, Scylla, Charybdis, Helios, etc. 

This should be the outline for your essay:

Introduction

One sentence each describing the life story learned in each story
Interesting grabber sentence
Transitional sentence

First body paragraph:
Thesis statement for the first body paragraph
Very brief summary of the story – in your own words

Very brief summary of the story – in your own words
Quotation which conveys the moral of this story
In your own words explain the moral to be learned.
In your own words do you think  Odysseus and his men learned the lesson. 


Third body paragraph:
Thesis statement for the third body paragraph
Show how both stories give important life lessons by comparing and contrasting them.
Use summary and quotations to prove point.

Concluding paragraph:
Briefly list the life lessons learned
Write a final summing up of the lessons learned.

Starter paragraph for The Odyssey essay:

One of the purposes of The Odyssey was to teach young Greeks important life lessons - important things such as not to waste time, or to be polite to guests. During Odysseus’ long voyage home he encountered many strange and difficult situations which challenged him and his men.  During his wanderings Odysseus and his crew many times found themselves as guests in other people's homes.  In Book Nine of The Odyssey,  Odysseus lands on two different islands - the island of the Cicones and the island of the Cyclops.  Due to the very rude behavior of his crew as guests on these islands horrible things happened and some of the men lost their lives at the hands of the angry hosts. Had they behaved intelligently tragedy could have been avoided.  Odysseus's men never learned the lesson that in Greek society, the ties between guests and hosts were sacred.  Both host and guest must be respected, and because the crew never learned that lesson, they died. When Odysseus,  alone,  returned home, he had one final lesson to learn - ironically, he was now the host and a large number of rude, violent, and dangerous "guests" were there at his house, robbing him of his home.
