Introductory Paragraph:

Thesis Statement

Your hook

Three points or subjects that you are going to cover in your paper.

The last sentence acts as a transition to the next paragraph

Thesis Statement:

It has to have a thesis! A thesis is your theory or your argument about the subject.

Example:

Edgar Allan lived a life of mystery, but nothing is more mysterious than how he died. There are many theories regarding how Poe died, but the overwhelming evidence suggests that he died of a combination of alcoholism and exposure.

There are many theories regarding how Poe died, but there is now new compelling evidence that Poe died, not from alcoholism, as so many people thought, but of encephalitic rabies.

Melany:

Edgar Allan Poe wrote of mysterious things, and mysterious was the life he led, but the most mysterious part was how he became dead – by alcohol or by a rabid animal’s bite. The evidence strongly suggests he died from alcoholism.

Julian:

The plentiful amount of evidence of Poe’s death is overwhelming; however, the evidence strongly suggests he died from alcoholism.

Thesis Statement:

Topic + Your Position on the Topic = Thesis Statement

The thesis statement is anywhere in the first paragraph and restated in the final paragraph!

Write a grabber that makes someone want to read your paper.

A grabber is a hook  or an interesting fact or anecdote that makes the reader want to read your paper.

The next part of the introductory paragraph should include the three major topics or issues the paper will cover.

 Write the three ideas or evidence that your research paper will cover.

Yessenia: There was something called “cooping” in the 19^th century, in which one group jumps a person to force him to vote a certain way. There is a theory that perhaps Edgar Allan Poe was “cooped” or jumped!

Please write a rough draft of the introductory paragraph for your persuasive essay on how Edgar Allan Poe died.

Remember, in the first paragaph you need:

 a thesis statement

a grabber: an interesting anecdote or an interesting fact

three main ideas you are going to cover in the paper

Monday, November 13th: 

Passed back The Cask of Amontillado test

If you made below an “A” and you would like to raise your grade one letter grade, then you must write out the question and write out the correct answer to the question you missed. You only have to write out the questions and the answers to those questions you missed. However, you must write out the complete questions and the complete answers, not just the letter.

Please write the questions and the answers on a separate sheet of paper and staple it to the test.  It will be due Thursday, November 16^th.

Open your books to page 188, “Poe’s Death is Rewritten as a Case of Rabies, Not Alcoholism,

Begin at the bottom of the left hand column, “The curator of the Edgar Allan Poe House….”

Who was Mr. Jerome?

David answered the question

He was the curator.

What is a curator?

David: A curator is the keeper or manager of a museum or art collection. That means that he or she knows a great deal about the subject.

David: Mr. Jerome is saying that there are many, many stories about how Poe died, but no one offers proof.

Lizbeth:  Mr. Jerome says that Poe almost certainly did not die of alcoholism; he was very sensitive to alcohol and one drink could make him violently sick for days.

Hypothetical: in theory, not in reality.

“Let me pose a hypothetical question to you, doctor. What if a man interested in a certain female doctor asked her out, what are the chances she would say yes?”

Pathologist:

Milan: a doctor who studies forensics and the cause of death.

Julian: an autopsy is when the pathologist or the coroner examines a corpse for the to determine the cause of death.

Lizbeth: a pathologist is a doctor who studies the causes of diseases, particularly unique or lethal diseases.

Why did Dr. Benitez examine Poe’s medical records?

He was given an anonymous patient’s medical chart and was given the task to figure out how the patient died.

How did Dr. Benitez figure out that it was Poe’s medical records he was reading?

He figured it out through deduction. There were no cat scans or CTEs from the medical charts. The patient was from an earlier time – earlier than the late 20^th century. The patient’s initials were E.P., a writer from Richmond.

Melany reads:

“If Only Poe Had Succeeded When He Said Nevermore to Drink”.

Two doctors offer a different opinion from Dr. Benitez and they agree with Dr. Moran that Poe died from alcoholism.

Their arguments are that there were eye-witness accounts who said Poe was drunk. 

His relatives, his uncle-in-law, his cousins, and Dr. Moran all claimed Poe was drunk or had a very long history of drinking. 

The two doctors' other argument is Poe’s own words let us know that he was still drinking. He wrote letters of deepest apologies and swore oaths to his beloved wife and mother-in-law, that he would never drink again and yet, a few weeks or months later, there would be more letters swearing again that he would never drink again. And this continued for years.

“Rabies Death Theory”

Vocabulary:

Encephalitis

Taylor – encephalitis is inflammation of the brain

Tymiah – rabid, which is what an animal that has rabies is called.

Rabid is an adjective, which describes an animal that has rabies.

According to Dr. Benitez, in the last twenty years, there have been thirty-three human cases of rabies.

David and Diego: Only 24% of those could remember being bitten by an animal.

Jestice: Fifteen cases where bat related.

But only seven of the fifteen cases could remember coming in contact with a bat.

That means eight of the fifteen did not remember coming in contact with a bat.

How long is the incubation period of rabies?

Taylor: It can be as long as a year.

Taylor and David: came up with the definition of incubation

Incubation: the amount of time between the transmission of the disease and the appearance of the disease’s symptoms.

Did doctors know how rabies was transmitted?

What is the causative agent of rabies?

Rhabdovirus is the virus that causes rabies, which was unknown to doctors in the 19^th century.

Dr. Benitez claimed he never blamed poor Caterina for giving Poe rabies.

Who is Louis Pasteur and what did he do?

Jestice and Milan:  Louis Pasteur developed the rabies vaccine but he did not know about the rhabdovirus. 

Diego:  Louis Pasteur was also a French chemist, who helped develop the important medical link between the transmission of disease and germs. Pasteur had developed a rabies vaccine taken from the tissue taken from rabid animals. However, he and other scientists had not isolated and identified the virus that causes rabies.

Vocabulary: 

Exposure means when someone is out in extreme weather, particularly cold, rainy, or snowy weather which can cause someone to fall very ill and even die.

Hallucination: to see things that are not real or are not there in reality.

Then pair up with your partner and find evidence from the text that supports the theory that Poe died from Encephalitic Rabies.

 Incoherent:

Trenton: speech that suggests the speaker is not in a sane state.

Taylor: Expressed in an incomprehensible state.

When Moran questions Poe, his answers are incoherent. He did not know what happened to his trunk. He also said that he left his wife in Richmond – but Poe’s wife was dead, and he had broken up with his fiancée.

What were Poe’s last words?

Trenton: “Lord help my poor soul.”

And when did he expire?

October 6^th at 3 a.m.

Expires means to die.

Diego: the only family members who visited Poe were the two daughters of his uncle-in-law, Henry Herring.

Diego: Poe became violent and had to be held down by two nurses.

Do we know how and why Poe died?

Moran reported that Poe’s heavy perspiration, trembling, and hallucinations suggest that  he died of delirium tremens, mania a potu.

What do most of the people, including the doctors, think Poe died from?

From heavy alcoholism.

Congestion of the brain is what doctors referred to as alcoholism. Congestion of the brain is a euphemism for death by alcoholism

Euphemism: a more polite expression for an embarrassing thing, situation, or event.

“I have to powder my nose” is a euphemism for going to the bathroom.

Cerebral refers to the brain

Inflammation: inflamed, swollen, infected

Vigorously:with great energy, with great strength

Poe’s immune system was already weakened by years of alcoholism. He was already sick with a fever, and he was simply too drunk to care for himself.

Temperance advocate: someone advocates that no one drinks.

Dr. Benitez believes that Dr. Moran had become a temperance advocate and had changed the detail of Poe’s death to convince people that drinking was dangerous and should be banned.

“A Haunted Life”

Consumption is a 19^th century name for tuberculosis, which  is caused either by bacteria or a virus. In the 19^th century it was fatal.  

Conservative: one who believes that the traditional way of doing things is the best way to live.

The French loved Poe as a writer long before the Americans realized his genius.

Masons: a closed society that was open only to white wealthy men of influence and power.

A mason is a brick layer or a wall builder.

Refuge: a place of safety

Refugees are fleeing from war torn countries and are seeking refuge in the U.S. and in Europe.

Delirious: feverish and drifting in and out of consciousness.

Tavern: a bar or a saloon, a place where people go to drink

Time Line: 

Poe departed from Richmond, Virginia, to Baltimore, Maryland. His eventual goal was to go to New York City!!!!

Early morning of Thursday, September 27^th Poe set out from Virginia to Baltimore.

There is no reliable evidence what happened between that time and October 3^rd when he was discovered in a tavern, ill and delirious.

Physician is a doctor!

Taverns were used as polling places. In the 19^th century women were not allowed to vote so that was why taverns were used as polling places.

Polling places were where men went to vote!!!

Poe was found in a delirious state, feverish and drifting in and out of consciousness, and dressed in a stranger’s clothing.

Who was Joseph Evans Snodgrass?

He was an editor and a physician who knew Edgar Allan Poe.

Who suddenly arrived at the tavern?

Henry Herring, an uncle by marriage to Edgar Allan Poe.

Why didn’t this person want to help Edgar Allan Poe?

Because when Henry Herring gave Edgar Allan Poe and his family a place to stay, Poe was not only ungrateful but rude and abusive – particularly when he was drunk! (And that was often!)

What did this person suggest instead?

To call a carriage and take him to the hospital.

At this point what state was Poe in as he was carried into the carriage?

Poe was delirious; he was insensible and muttering.

Milan updated us on the story.

The Narrator has told Fortunato that he has bought a cask of very expensive wine called Amontillado. It is during Mardi Gras, when that kind of wine is hard to come by. The Narrator HATES Fortunato!!!! Do we know why the Narrator hates Fortunato? No! The only thing we know is that the Narrator says that he has endured a thousand insults at the hand of Fortunato and he cannot bear it any longer. Is the Narrator reliable? No, he is a little crazy.

The Narrator wants revenge and the prediction is that someone is going to die!!!!

Why do you think the Narrator told Fortunato the story about the Amontillado?

What do we know about Fortunato?

He is a man to be respected.

He loves wine. He is a connoisseur of wine!

Who is Luchesi? He is the arch nemesis of Fortunato! They are rivals in their knowledge of wine!!!!

Absconded: past participle of abscond which means to run away and hide.

Bianca: After Amy got into an argument with her mom, she absconded from the situation.

Alejanda: My friend had absconded from her family for two days.

Obstinate: Stubborn; to stand against

Alejandra: I am very obstinate when it comes to racism.

Jose: My ex-best friend said I was really obstinate which is why we are not best friends any  more.

Jose is very obstinate when it comes to eating in Ms. Bridges’ class.

Gesticulation: a motion having to do with the hands to add force to a speech.

Bianca: The director told Oliver to use more gesticulation when speaking as the character.

Julian: My dad uses a lot of gesticulation when he scolds me.

Melanie: The poet uses gesticulation to add meaning to the words.

Crypt: a burial chamber, usually under the floor of a church.

Bianca: Florence went to jail for kidnapping a child and holding him hostage in a crypt.

Circumscribing: to limit, to restrict the action of.

Bianca: I circumscribed my kids from playing too many video games because I am worried about their health.

Trenton: The police started to circumscribe the man’s movements as they arrested him.

Alejandra: My mother is circumscribing my activities every time I want to hang out with my friends outside of Highland Park.

Endeavored: tried or tried to do something.

“It was in vain that Fortunato, uplifting his dull torch, endeavored to pry into the depths of the recess.

You are going to turn in your packet when you take the test on The Cask of Amontillado!!!!

Verbal Irony: when someone says something he or she doesn’t mean.

Milan and Julian demonstrate verbal irony. The difference between verbal irony and sarcasm is with sarcasm you want the person to know you are being snarky. With sarcasm the person wants the other person to feel silly or dumb or hurt. With verbal  irony you do not let the person know you don’t mean what you are saying.

Situational Irony: when a scene has an unexpected outcome. When the audience expects the scene or the play to turn out a certain way, but it turns out in a completely different way than the audience expected.

Dramatic Irony:

Melanie, Trenton, Bianca – when the audience and the other characters know something that another character doesn’t know.

Bianca gives an example of dramatic irony from a film entitled “Streets”. A girl is talking to a boy whose brother has just been shot. It turns out that she used to talk to the dead brother, but the boy doesn’t know that.

3. Dramatic irony:  Montresor means it when he says his family motto – No one attacks me without being attacked. However, Fortunato doesn’t realize he is about to be attacked!!!!

4. Verbal Irony: Montresor doesn’t care about Fortunato; in fact, he intends to kill him!!!!!  Montresor is pretending to care so that Fortunato won’t suspect his true motive – which is murder!!!!!

5. Verbal Irony: Montresor is saying things that would suggest he cares about Fortunato. But in fact, as he is saying to Fortunato, “Let me first render you all the little attentions in my power”,  Montresor is actually killing him!

Heightened Style:

Bianca, David, Jestice

Syntax is how words are put together to make a sentence.

Heightened Style uses unusual words, similes and metaphors, complicated syntax.

Heightened Style:

It was about dusk, one evening  during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend.

Plain style of the same sentence:

I met my friend just before nightfall during the carnival season.

Here are some features of  heightened style:

1.     Words of many syllables, poetic, or uncommon

2.     Allusions to historical or literary persons.

3.     A formal tone

4.     Figures of speech, such as similes and metaphors

Jestice, David, Bianca

At the end of the crypt, there was another crypt that was smaller.

Bianca, David:

Skeletons were laying against the wall to the vaulted ceiling, similar to the catacombs of Paris.

Bianca:

Three sides of the crypt were still “ornamented” in this fashion.

Alejandra:

Against the fourth wall, a huge pile of bones had fallen down, forming a huge mound of bones.

Diego, Bianca:

Because the bones had fallen, we could see a small room in the fourth wall. The smaller room was four feet in depth, three feet in width, and about six or seven feet in height.

The smaller room did not seem to have been built for any specific reason. It was just the space between two huge columns to support the ceiling of the crypt and the wall of solid granite.

Vocabulary:

Fortunato is the name of a character.

It would be ironic if a person whose name is Fortunate is unlucky.

Utterance: speech

Avenged: to redress or right a wrong.  When someone commits a wrong against  an innocent person and someone defends the wronged person.

Precluded: to take an action before an event to prevent something bad from happening.

Milan: Diego says that when his mom is in a bad mood, Diego goes into another room with his little dog Chapo.

To preclude bad grades be sure to do your homework.

Impunity: freedom from punishment and harm.

Retribution: punishment.

I must not only punish but I must get away with it (with impunity).

Redress is revenge!!!! To redress a wrong! To revenge a wrong!

Redresser: a revenger!!!

“It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.”

A wrong is unrevenged when the bully doesn’t suffer the same amount of pain as the victim.

The narrator is unreliable. This means that the narrator cannot necessarily be believed either because s/he is deliberately lying or is insane.

Immolation: destruction

The narrator misleads Fortunato by continuing to smile in his face, but his smile is at the thought of Fortunato’s destruction.
