The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe
Setting:
Venice, Italy
19th Century – 1800s
Vocabulary:
Fortunato is the name of a character.
It would be ironic if a person whose name is Fortunate is unlucky.
Utterance: speech
Avenged: to redress or right a wrong.  When someone commits a wrong against  an innocent person and someone defends the wronged person.
Precluded: to take an action before an event to prevent something bad from happening.
Milan: Diego says that when his mom is in a bad mood, Diego goes into another room with his little dog Chapo.
To preclude bad grades be sure to do your homework.
Impunity: freedom from punishment and harm.
Retribution: punishment.
I must not only punish but I must get away with it (with impunity).
Redress is revenge!!!! To redress a wrong! To revenge a wrong!
Redresser: a revenger!!!
“It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.”
A wrong is unrevenged when the bully doesn’t suffer the same amount of pain as the victim.

The narrator is unreliable. This means that the narrator cannot necessarily be believed either because s/he is deliberately lying or is insane.

Immolation: destruction
The narrator misleads Fortunato by continuing to smile in his face, but his smile is at the thought of Fortunato’s destruction.

Thursday, October 19th:

Period 4:
Pass out  The Cask of Amontillado vocabulary packet

What is the one thing that Fortunato takes seriously? Wine!!!!
Fortunato prides himself on being a wine connoisseur – or wine expert!
Fortunatao was dressed like a clown.
What is Amontillado?
Amontillado is a wine!!!!!!!!!
Luchesi is Fortunato’s rival in the wine drinking and tasting department.
Notice how the narrator manipulates Fortunato into going with him to his home to taste the Amontillado.

Suffer means to grudgingly allow. “I suffered him to come with me to the party.”

Monday, October 9th:
Please open your books to page 27, please get out your notes on the video, and a piece of paper and a pen.

Today we will work on your thesis statement and your introductory paragraph.
The thesis statement is a sentence that has the topic and your position on the topic.
Julian:
Animals are very smart and therefore they should be treated better.
David:
Because animals are much smarter than we realize, they should be treated with greater respect.
Because animals are capable of thinking and feeling, we should not hunt them or eat them.
Trenton:
Animals are just as smart as humans and therefore, humans shouldn’t think they are superior them in any way.
Animals are___________________; therefore, animals should be treated______________________.
Cierra:
Animals are very smart and have feelings; therefore, humans should respect them.

Outline for the Essay:
Introductory Paragraph:
Where does the thesis statement go?
Bianca: Anywhere in the first paragraph
Grabber or a hook
Anecdote –
Lizbeth: a short or interesting story about a real incident or a real person
Include three things you are going to write about in your essay.
Transition sentence!

The First Body Paragraph
The mini-topic sentence – the idea or position
The mini-topic sentence lets us know what the paragraph is about.

Introduction to supporting evidence
Evidence – something which supports the thesis statement
The evidence can be a quotation or an anecdote from the video or the article we read.
After the evidence, explain, or analyze, or paraphrase the quotation in order to show how the evidence supports your thesis.  This should be about two to four sentences.
The transition sentence which will then take you to the next body paragraph.

Repeat the body paragraph two more times!!!!!!

Conclusion:
Restate your thesis statement
Briefly go over the main points to support your thesis statement
Then write one strong concluding line.

Build a Body Paragraph!!!!
Topic Sentences
Animals are very intelligent and should be treated the way humans are treated.
Topic Sentence:
For many years scientists thought that only humans were intelligent enough to use tools, until one day a scientist saw a bird using a stick as a tool to dig for food.

This develops the mini-topic sentence:
This shows that animals can think and use tools to get what they want like food, just like we do.  Scientists have found that there are many animals that use tools.

Examples:
Milan:
For example, elephants use their trunks as tools to do work not only for themselves but also for humans.
Yessenia:
Another example is Fu Manchu, an orangutan, who escaped from his enclosure by stealing a wire from a louvered air vent and using it to pick the lock from his cage.
Hilaryd:
According to Eugene Linden, in his article “Can Animals Think?”, the zoo keeper noticed that Fu Manchu stowed the wire in his mouth so he could  plan future escapes.
Yessenia:
This shows that Fu Manchu, an orangutan, figured out not only how to use a wire as a tool, but also had the intelligence to hide it so he could use it again for future escapes.
Transition Sentence:
Milan:
These aren’t the only examples of animal intelligence. There are many more examples that haven’t been discovered of animals using tools.
 Cierra:
We humans treat animals based on what scientists think and say, not knowing that animals think, feel, and know how to do things we humans don’t.

Another examples of animals being smart:
Julian: When you ask your dog where your cousin is and she takes you to him.
Bianca: A dog learned how to jump on a mattress after watching two little girls jump.
Hilaryd and Yessenia:  A dog has learned how to watch traffic patterns before crossing the street.

More Examples of Animals Being Smart:
Milan: Hurricane evacuees released their animals before the hurricane. The animals, dogs and cats, were smart enough to find high ground so they survived the flooding.

For homework tonight:
Please write your introductory paragraph, your paragraph on animal intelligence, and your paragraph on animal emotions.

Friday, October 13th:

2nd Body Paragraph
Mini-topic statement:
Yessenia
Animals have feelings, too, even if they don’t show it.  Animals have their own language and humans may not be able to “read” or understand their language.
Lizbeth found this online:
According to Jackson Galaxy, the famous “cat whisperer”, when your cat does a slow blink, she is telling you that she is feeling happy and content with you. This is called a “kitty kiss”.  Many people don’t like cats but it is because people do not know how to interpret cat language.
Milan:
Another example that shows animals have feelings is when Milan meows at her cat, her cat will meow back at her, which starts a “meowing” conversation that ends with her cat running to her and rubbing against her.
Julian:
Elephants have been known to destroy the villages of poachers who have killed members of their herd.
Another example is from a youtube video, “Why Elephants Never Forget“, which states elephants have been known to attack villages of poachers who have killed members of their herds.
Jason read his paper based on a true story found on the “Modern Dog” website about a dog who grieved so much over the death of his owner that he refused to eat, and  eventually died.  This dog literally died from grief.
David:
Elephants have funeral rituals  which honor their dead. They will stand guard close to their deceased elephant family member – their mother, their sister, their daughter – for several days and lovingly touch the body.

Another example of elephants expressing emotions is when they encounter a dead elephant that is not a part of their family.  The herd will stop for some time and carefully and respectfully examine the bones and the body of the stranger elephant.

3.    word origin
4.    definition

Due on Friday, October 6th!

Please do a quick write on whether animals have thoughts and feelings!
A quick write is where you write down all your thoughts and feelings, things you have heard or read about a particular subject on a sheet of paper, without paying attention to spelling or punctuation or grammar.  This is the beginning of the creative process of writing. The quick write is not for the teacher; it is for you to formulate your thoughts about a particular subject.

Share with your neighbor your quick write. You can discuss and share ideas. Then listen respectfully as your neighbor read hers and discuss and share ideas.

Share:
Cierra: Animals do have thoughts and  feelings. She has a dog and thinks that dogs and other animals think and know more than humans think.

Trenton: In his opinion he thinks the question is stupid. Humans are pretty dumb – if you feel bad if you lost a child, why would you think an animal wouldn’t feel bad, too. Also, body structure plays a large part.

Milan: We learned about animals learning sign language, or saving another person. Dogs can learn from past experiences. The orca whale saving a baby whale was very interesting. Milan makes a parallel between The Most Dangerous Game and what science is now telling us.

Alejandra: Animals have feelings and thoughts like us, but they don’t look like us. The animals learn like a three year old – like sign language. She provides a personal anecdote – there was a person she didn’t  like and the dog knew it and started barking at the person.

Lizbeth L.: Animals do have feelings. This may be due to how animals are brought up. Elephants have very many feelings; as do wolves, and dogs. Wolves protect and love other members of their pack. Examples of feelings among animals are wolves, dogs, lions, elephants. Dogs grieve when a close companion dies.

Thursday, October 5th:
Review your quick write for about three minutes.
Then, we will work on a thesis statement for your persuasive essay.
Yessenia: A statement that you have to prove in your essay.
The thesis statement has to answer a question or an argument.
The thesis has to include the topic and your position on the topic.

Yessenia: Do animals have thoughts and feelings?
Trenton: Think about it as if you are reading a book. Have you ever read a book that starts off with “This book is going to be about”?
Animals have thoughts and feelings and should be treated much better by humans.
Anti-animal rights thesis statements:
Some people think that animals don’t have thoughts or feelings and therefore, it doesn’t matter how they are treated.
There is no scientific evidence to show that animals have great intelligence or feelings, and therefore, humans should be allowed to treat animals any way they want.
Bianca: Animals have thoughts and feelings and in some instances, can outsmart the average human.
Persuade: convince some one to do what you want.
Persuasion essay means you are trying to convince the readers to switch their opinions.
Examples of a topic sentence:
There is a great deal of scientific evidence that shows animals have thoughts and feelings; therefore, we should rethink our treatment of animals in terms of our hunting and eating them.
Julian: Animals have thoughts and feelings which they have shown in many ways; therefore, they should be treated with the same respect we show humans.
Melanie: Animals are highly intelligent and have feelings; many people say this, but they don’t show it.
Bianca: Animals have thoughts and feelings, and in some instances, have outsmarted the average human; therefore, animals should be treated with respect and care.
Tymayah: Studies have shown that animals do have feelings and thoughts; therefore, animals should be appreciated and respected.
Cierra: Animals have thoughts, feelings, and potential; therefore, they should be treated no differently than humans.
Grabbers and hooks:
David: Did you know that the elephant’s brain is more similar to a human’s than a chimpanzee’s brain is to a human's?

Bianca: Elephants are so smart that when they come across another elephant’s remains, they curiously and respectfully examine the bones of the dead.

Then you need  to explain or paraphrase the quotation
Then show how the quotation or evidence supports your thesis
Then write your transition sentence to move to the next body paragraph.
