Brief review of the “Cask of Amontillado” packet and situational, dramatic and verbal irony.
Break into groups of four and construct a board game for “The Most Dangerous Game”. The game should be playable, should test the players’ knowledge of the plot, characters and vocabulary words. This will be due on Wednesday, November 19th.

Weekly Schedule for 9th Grade Honors

Monday, November 10th:
Finish “The Most Dangerous Game”. Work on your reading log. The reading log should include a brief synopsis (summary) and vocabulary words (words that are unfamiliar to you) with definitions.
For example:
Setting: on a yacht in the middle of the Caribbean. There are two men, Whitney and Rainsford who are hunters. They are discussing hunting. Rainsford doesn’t think it’s important to care how the hunted feel - “The world is divided into two: the hunter and the huntee - and who cares how the hunted feel?” The yacht is passing by an island (named “Ship Trap Island) with a creepy reputation. Rainsford thinks he hears a gunshot and when he leans far out on the railing, he loses his balance, falls overboard and has to swim to - you guessed it - “Ship Trap Island”.
Vocabulary words:
palpable: able to be touched or seen.
“The Most Dangerous Game” packet will be passed out to you.

Tuesday, November 11th:
No school today in observance of Veterans’ Day.
Wednesday, November 12th:
Divide into groups of three and present one word each from “The Most Dangerous Game” vocabulary. Work on the packet: “Suspense” and “Adjectives”.
Go over the plot graph for the story: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement.
Thursday, November 13th:
The class will be broken into groups of four and will be assigned one of the following from “The Most Dangerous Game”: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement. Your group’s job will be to identify your element from the story’s plot and then present to the class.
Friday, November 14th:
Test over “The Most Dangerous Game”. The test will include vocabulary, comprehension and plot graph.
Break into groups of three and begin work on a board game based on the story. The board game should include the following:
Details about the plot
Details about the character
What part of the story is exposition?
What part of the story falls is rising action?
What is the climax of the story?

Continue working on the reading comprehension and multiple choice questions.


WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15TH:

Begin working on the short response form.
The short response form will be due at the beginning of the period.


THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16TH:

Minimum day! Open house tonight: 5:30 to 7:30

Begin working on the long extended response (code word for essay!).


FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17TH:

Work on the essay. Please refer to page one and page 74 in the packet you were given yesterday as reference on how to do the introductory paragraph and the body paragraphs.
The essay will be due on Tuesday upon my return.

Heads up: a small quiz over the vocabulary words on pages 4 - 14 will be give next Wednesday, October 22nd.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE
FOR 9TH ADVISORY

MONDAY, OCTOBER 6TH:

Break into groups of three or four to create a group name, a symbol and set of rules the group should follow.

Once you are finished, reflect on the roles each student played in the group. Who was the decision maker? Were there any disagreements? How were they resolved?

Do you think people act differently in a group? Have you ever been in a group situation you felt uncomfortable in but for the sake of the group (fitting in), you followed along?

Groupthink is a term developed by a psychologist, Dr. Irving Janis. It describes a process that happens to groups that cause them to act violently, or make irrational decisions. In a “groupthink” situation members of the group conform their own ideas to create group consensus.

Discuss situations where you might have seen “groupthink” occur.

Gather together in socratic circle and discuss “The Necklace.”

Final presentations of “Continuing the Story: The Necklace.”

Wee short quizzes over “The Sniper” and “The Necklace”.

An essay will be assigned today on “The Necklace”. The essay must be two pages long and have five paragraphs; The essay may be hand written, but must be neat and have a rough draft. You may also type it.

Discuss the use of irony and character in “The Necklace”. Compare the character of Madame Loisel at the beginning of the story with her character at the end of the story. Has she changed? Give evidence to show how she has or has not changed. What are the ironies in the story regarding Madame Loisel and how do they contribute to her character development or lack of development?

This essay will be due on Wednesday, October 8th.


WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8TH:

Warm-up: Choose ten words from pages 4 - 15 in your VOCABULARY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT and make a pictionary of the words. One drawing per word. Write a grammatically correct sentence for each vocabulary word. show to your partner.

“Memory Log”: Step backwards in time and create a memory bank of your experiences. Write about an accident you experienced, a trip you took, your first______________; a secret, a special place you know of or you go to, a family story everyone shares around the dinner table or at family gatherings.

Story descriptions: Go through the excerpt again, circle and write about three very strong descriptive phrases. Write about the feelings, the image, the thoughts the descriptions arouse in you as you read.

Sensory description chart: Write down three or four more phrases and write the effect the phrases have on the meaning of the passage.


Tuesday, September 16th:

Shortened Day:

If we receive our books today, then pages 4 - 15, exercises 1 - 4 and exercises 6 - 9 in VOCABULARY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT will be assigned today. The homework will be due Tuesday, September 23rd.

Write a memoir about an event in your life. This memoir will be due on Thursday, September 18th. The memoir should be two pages long, typed or neatly written and is about an important or memorable moment in your life.

Thursday, September 18th:

Discussion of point of view and irony.

Irony exercise: Three improvs showcasing the different types of irony: situational, verbal, dramatic.

Point of view exercise: Share with a partner a conflict you had with another; then write about the incident - BUT THIS TIME FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF THE OTHER PERSON INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT.


Friday, September 19th:

Break into groups and rewrite the story from the point of view one of the following characters: the old woman, the other sniper, the driver of the tank, the soldier in the tank who speaks to the old woman, omniscient.

June 16th Weekly Schedule

9th Grade

Monday, June 16th - Friday, June 20th:

1st, 2nd and 5th Periods:

Each day this week we will read the perks of being a wallflower and write a reflection - which must be at least one half page in length. Choose one or more events in the section we have read and comment on it. The comment may be positive or negative, personal or not; however, the opinions must be well written, in appropriate language and supported by what you have read in the book. You should also write in the reflection any words which you are not familiar. I am predicting we will be finished by Friday which means that you will turn in your perks of being a wallflower on that date.


Friday, June 20th:

Your notebook and your perks of being a wallflower are due today.

The notebook is due at the beginning of the class; please do not plan to use Friday to put your notebook together. Do that during the evenings prior to Friday.

As soon as we finish the novel - I hope by Friday - we will begin working on the final assessment of the semester which is literary analysis. The assessment will include reading two selections - one is a short story, the other a play - and writing a well constructed five paragraph essay on the theme of the selections.

We will then take a multiple choice test which will cover grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Friday (June 20th) and Monday (June 23rd) will be devoted to the assessment. The final will be used to finish up the essay.

Today we will work on our essay for ROMEO and JULIET. The essay topic was passed out to you on Friday and we went over the topics in class. The topics are also posted on this web log; scroll down to find them. The essay will be due on Wednesday, June 4th.

ESSAY TOPICS FOR ROMEO and JULIET











Choose one of the following topics and write a well-organized and well-crafted five paragraph essay.

1. Is Mercutio a foil to Romeo? A foil is a character whose personality or traits are the opposite of those of the the lead character; these differences point out and highlight the personality of the lead character. You should find quotations and examples from the play to support your thesis. You may want to use your Act 2 vocabulary packet to help you on this one.

2. Examine Shakespeare’s use of light and dark in literary tropes to illustrate Romeo’s mood in the play. For example, in the beginning of the play Romeo frequently refers to darkness and heaviness; it is when he meets Juliet that he begins to speak of lightness (“It is with love’s light wings did I o’er perch these walls...”) You must find examples to support your thesis.

3. Examine Shakespeare’s use of irony to enhance the suspense in the play. One might examine the dramatic irony in Act 4, Scene 2 in which Juliet’s mother informs her of her impending marriage to Paris. There are many examples of situational and dramatic irony, as well as some verbal irony, in ROMEO and JULIET. Give at least three examples of irony (one of each: situational, verbal, and dramatic) in the play.

4. Examine the role of women in the play: Juliet, the Nurse and Lady Capulet. Show how each responds to the crisis in her life: Juliet’s forced marriage to Paris; Lord Capulet’s abuse of the Nurse and Lady Capulet, and Juliet’s estrangement from the Nurse. You might also wish to consider Lady Capulet's life; in all probability she too was forced into an arranged marriage at the same age as Juliet. Notice in Act 4 Lady Capulet's response to Lord Capulet's sudden decision to change the wedding date. How much resistance does she offer? Does Lord Capulet even consider her objections? Consider too that this scene follows hard upon Act 4, Scene 2 in which Lord Capulet reacts violently to Juliet's refusal to bend to his will. Consider the Nurse's hard, realistic advice to Juliet. Did her life experiences teach her to be pragmatic and realistic?

5. Discuss the theme of the play, ROMEO and JULIET. Find examples to support what you believe is the theme of the play.

6. Throughout the play Romeo makes frequent references to the stars and to the prophetic power of dreams. However, is it the stars and dreams that lead to Romeo's and Juliet's deaths or is it just poor, rash judgment on his part that leads to tragedy? Be sure to use examples from the play to support your thesis.

7. Analyzing the text, find examples in which the characters' poor decisions lead to the tragedy. What better decisions could Lord and Lady Capulet, the Montagues, the Friar, the Nurse, Mercutio, Tybalt, and of course, Romeo and Juliet have made that would have averted tragedy? You might want to use your "consequences" paper to help you on this.

8. Compare and contrast Romeo and Juliet. How are they similar and how are they dissimilar?

9. Compare and contrast any two characters in the play. How is Benvolio a foil to Mercutio? Or how is Tybalt a foil to Mercutio? Or how is the Apothecary a foil to the Friar?

10. Discuss Shakespeare's use of literary language to enhance meaning in the play. Some of the literary language you may wish to consider are: personification, metaphor, simile, allusion, imagery, apostrophe and ironic devices. How does he use these devices to: reveal character or to enhance suspense or to reveal theme or to forward the plot.

You must include a rough draft along with your finished final draft.

Begin work on essay for ROMEO and JULIET. This will be due on Thursday, May 29th.

2nd Period:

Break into groups, finish working on the rewrites for ROMEO and JULIET, and begin presenting.

5th Period:

Quickly go over the answers to the Act 4 test of ROMEO and JULIET
Begin reading Act 5, the last and final act of ROMEO and JULIET.
The Act 5 vocabulary packet will be passed out to you today; this packet will be due at the time of the test.


WEDNESDAY, MAY 28th:

1st, 2nd and 5th Periods:

Your extra credit collage is due today.

1st Period:

Continue working on your essay today. It will be due at the end of the period, along with your greatly anticipated reading logs for ROMEO and JULIET. Can’t wait to read ‘em!


2nd Period:

Finish presenting your group’s rewrites.

Begin working on your essays for ROMEO and JULIET.

5th Period:

We will probably be finished with the play today and will begin our review for the oh, so popular test. Remember, your Act V vocabulary packet will be due at the time of the test.

Today I think we could all use a break so I think we’re just going to read THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. But next week, please bring your vocabulary book on Monday and your English Workshop on Tuesday; we are going to do a final push before you guys take off for sophomore land.
